Malaysia: Layover in Kuala Lumpur

I had a two-day layover in Kuala Lumpur on a recent trip to south-east Asia. It’s a great city to explore – easy to navigate using multiple modes of transportation, plenty of food and shopping options, and some interesting touristic places to visit.

I spent two days in Kuala Lumpur on my way from Indonesia to India. It was a good amount of time to get a feel for the city and I enjoyed spending time here.

The first thing that struck me, as an urban planning nerd, as a was how multimodal Kuala Lumpur transport was. We took an express bus from the airport to the central station in downtown from where train, bus, and monorail lines spawned out. Our monorail ride to the hotel was fast and comfortable, with announcements in Malay and English. You could easily function in KL without Malay, which btw is very similar to Bahasa Indonesia. No surprises there.

I spent my time walking around downtown, and checking out the pedestrian street markets, central market, bird sanctuary, and a food district – a street full of restaurants specializing in food from all over the world and swarming with tourists and visitors.

This brief preview of Kuala Lumpur made me eager to visit the rest of the country next.
