St. Petersburg’s architecture glitters after the sun goes down.
On my second night in St. Petersburg, the sky was clear, the wind was gentle and the weather was nice but cold. The sights I had seen while walking in the city during the day appeared quite different at night!
Winter Palace. The storming of this palace in 1917 was a turning point of Russian Revolution
Statue of the river Dnieper at the northern Rostral column
Kunstkamera, the first museum in Russia
Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. Does this remind you of Moscow’s St. Basil’s Cathedral?
St. Petersburg is an architecturally rich city. From Baroque to neoclassical to romanticist and finally constructivist/Stalinist style of construction, the city is a museum in itself and a wonderful place for an amateur architecture buff like me.
Beautiful! Wish to go there one day (specially after reading Dostoevsky).
Aha! Let me guess… Crime and Punishment…??
I’ve noticed Russian architecture (I’ve seen in former East Germany) is very imposing in style, the buildings have a presence you can feel.
Hi Anil, in one phase, there were lots of buildings in the Empire style of construction. I find those the most imposing and cold.
Wait, Kunstkamera is different from the Hermitage? The Hermitage is the largest art museum ever, right? (I know, that sounded like a Valley Girl comment, but whatever…)
Yeah they are different. Kuntskamera was supposedly the first museum in Russia. Hermitage is the largest art museum ever.. 😛
I love the church and the Kunstkamera!
Me too Zhu!

Hi,
I am travelling to Moscow and St. Petersburg in June, and carrying notes from your blog as well…
Wanted to know if you did venture to clubs in st Petersburg and if yes what was your experience!
Enjoy your time there! I did visit a couple of bars, Except some Euro music and lack of English, it was just the same.
