Quito, the capital of Ecuador

Quito, the capital of Ecuador, lies between two mountain ranges and its altitude is 2,800 metres or about 10,000 feet. The city has a beautiful old district with a colonial feel and a modern entertainment district with lots of tourists. I spent several days in Quito and used it as a base to explore places around it.

Otavalo and surrounding areas

Otavalo, two hours from Quito, is world-famous for its indigenous population and its Saturday markets. It's a great base for exploring little towns (Cotacachi, Cayambe, San Pablo), Lakes (Cuicocha, Mojanda), and volcanic mountains (Fuya Fuya, Imbabura). Otavalo is quite close to the Equator too!
