Things to do around Novgorod
Since Novgorod has the dubious distinction of being the only other city in Russia (the other being St. Petersburg) that has an English speaking tourist information office, we embarked upon a little tour of the countryside.
A rickety village bus
The Yurev Monastery outside Novgorod is a fantastic site to visit as it is surrounded by quiet marshes and offers a beautiful view of the river meandering along the coast as you view straight towards the city of Novgorod.
It is believed that this orthodox church was originally the site of the Slavic Pagan god Perun. After the arrival of Christianity, signs and symbols of Paganism were destroyed and the concepts were slowly absorbed into the Christian religion.
About a kilometer away from the monastery is the Museum of Wooden Architecture. This place is an open-air museum showing houses and churches of ordinary people from the region. A couple of these structures were open and it was intriguing to see how people lived in the older days of oil lamps and fireplaces.
I would imagine these places to be much more enjoyable when the weather was good.

That is some intricate woodwork there! And that rickety bus reminds me of the movie “Transsiberian”. There was this scene involving the characters taking a bus ride somewhere remote and a killing takes place.
