Toronto Turkish Festival
The 4th Annual Toronto Turkish festival was held over the weekend (August 1 and 2, 2009) at Yonge-Dundas square and I happened to be there for a short time by chance. Turkey is a country I am very curious to visit, since according to a theory, my ancestors supposedly originated from somewhere in the Asia minor / Anatolia region.
There must have been some performances at the stage later that day
Classic “Ethnic” fare
Beautiful indeed, I’d love to have some trinkets like these. But there’s no fun buying them in Toronto.
The Turkish food joints were still starting up and all that was available at that time was hot dog, fries and coca cola – my most unlikeable foods. I must go to a Turkish restaurant soon!
Since childhood, I was very fascinated with pottery. I love watching slimy clay being shaped on the turntable
Jewelery, woman and dance show on TV
More signature Turkish stuff
Turkey-Canada bhai-bhai
I was away for the past 4 days on a cycling-camping trip. I’ll blog about it later! ![]()

That ethnic stuff in photographs at least looks like it is from McLeod Ganj!
Oh, yeah true, reminds me of seeing such kind of fare. Dharamshala was a good time, lots of cheesy Buddhist stuff.
Puku, Wish you a very happy birthday. May all your dreams come true. Have a blast with your loved once buddy
Thanks bro!
Turkey is a country I am very curious to visit too..and when I do that someday I’ll go not only to Istanbul but to Konya and Cappadocia as well.
I’m also curious to know which theory is that which may have some relation to your light colored eyes.:P
Oh ofcourse, one has to see everything in detail. Turkey is amazing from geographical and natural perspective – it has everything there. Plus Turkish coffee and Baklava… lol
I don’t know the name of the theory, but some genealogy studies have shown that the origin of my community is from Turkey/Syria/Southern-East-Europe. Probably some independent migration from there to the Konkan coast via sea from Persia (Iran). These theories are always unreliable until published.
Turkish people are beautiful too
LOL. I mostly agree.
I am starting to have a feeling that Canada has a lot of festivals catering to its many sub-cultures. There’s the busker festival that Zhu blogged about, and now a Turkish festival? Don’t tell me there’s a Filipino festival too?
I can speak for Toronto, I don’t know about rest of Canada. I’m sure there is a Fillipino festival here too!
Too bad you missed the food, the best part of any Turkish festival
So many people who want to go to Turkey, wish we could all do a meet-up in Istanbul!
Ah that meetup sounds like a good idea. I had Turkish food recently, I love it
I think we had the festival in Ottawa a few weeks ago, but it was pouring, so I didn’t go.
Cool pictures!
I went there purely by luck.
Its a beautiful country. That is what my manager tell me who went there as a teenager.
I too would like to visit it one day.
Many people want to go to Turkey!
I’ve never tasted Turkey food! Now this post has piqued my curiosity
Ohh they have some of the best food. Although I admit I don’t know what makes Turkish food Turkish… sometimes it just seems “middle eastern” or “Mediterranean”.
It’s a blend of all the cuisines the Ottomans encountered during height of the empire. Mostly Mediterranean with a heavy Arab and Eastern European influence. It’s hard to peg it down though, every meal requires lots of variety!
Oh I see, I love the richness of herbs, olive oil base and unique use of fish and even pasta. Kebabs are my favorite ofcourse, and I regularly use the eggplant based ajvar spread which says ‘made in Turkey’. There is a guy who sells Turkish coffee in the Sunday flea market here and he knows 2 Hindi songs which he sings with me while saying ‘Our baklava is better than the Greek one.’ LOL!!
haha, of course it’s better!
