Great description of what it's like to stand in Tiger's Nest Monastary ... it's easy to slip into another world. I still recall that as we were hiking up one of our guides began playing the most ethereal music on a wooden flute - that and the sound of the wind drifted us up the final steps. Even at a young age, I knew that moment was a gift.I hiked there as a teenager in 1982 when only 2000 tourist visas were issued into Bhutan per year. My experiences there remain unparalleled. As for how the original monastary was built. Simple. On the valley floor - then levitated into place by a particularly powerful lama and his tiger. Thus the name. Or so the people told us when we asked. Seemed as possible as anything else.

I ran across your blog searching for images of hiking in Bhutan, and you have some excellent ones. I had the same intriguing question. Why build a temple in an inaccessible, remote, unconventional place? I guess the answer is implied.

Hi Aarti, Welcome to my blog!<br
