Biggest windmill in North America
About a week ago, we went on a one day cycling trip to some bike trails east of Toronto – Ajax, Pickering area. On our way back, we biked along the (Lake Ontario) waterfront next to the Pickering Nuclear Power Generation Station. The trail took a silent turn as we heard some big mechanical noises. Suddenly stood before us this humongous wind turbine, gently humming in the wind.

Wind Turbine
It looks like a harmless domestic fan in the above picture. I was standing almost directly under it and as the blade rotated downwards, it looked very scary. I don’t know what would happen if one of these blades falls. There was a wind storm in Toronto few days back, but I’m guessing that these turbines auto lock if the wind exceeds certain speed.

Information board: North America’s Largest Windturbine
The turbine stands 117 meters (384 feet) tall, with the tower being 78 m high, and blades being 39-meter (128-foot) long. The turbine produces 1.8 MW power. The windmill is made in Denkmark and was installed here (Pickering, East of Toronto) in 2001.

Windmill and the Nuclear Power Station
The waterfront bike trail spirals around the Nuclear Power plant and the windmill and is very beautiful. However, I could not take pictures of the nuclear power installation. Unfortunately my camera ran out of battery power at this point. How strangely ironical. ![]()

That looks really really tall!
Yep, scary tall!
The only time I saw a windmill up close was near Chikhaldhara, (Aurangabad, Maharashtra). And I guess it was not as huge as this!
Your fear of it dropping reminded me of the time in the US I flew in a propeller plane. I was sitting in a window right next to the propeller and was scared to death!
OMG, I would also freak out! I remember my first airplane trip. I was seated near the wings, and there was no propeller but the huge fans looked scary…!
I recently saw them setting up huge windmill farms in Satara-Kolhapur-Sangli zone too.
Heb je vandaag een klap van de molen gekregen?
thankyou, same to you, please visit again.
Loved your Toronto Tuesday posts.
Thanks Trisha
